"Grandmother Eagle"
I was inspired to create Grandmother Eagle by the love and influence of both my grandmother and my mother who belonged to the Eagle clan. In our matriarchal society these two women provided the stability and strength for me to become the person I am. From an early age, despite the hardships and turmoil in our lives, I was taught by them to be proud of my culture and my ancestary.
At one time in the near past my people on the central coast were misrepresented by anthroplogists and historians as Kwakiutl. When I spoke of this to my grandmother she looked me straight in the eyes and with her head held high she replied "We are Heiltsuks" This eagle represents that moment in time. Whenever I was challenged or having problems in my life I would remember my proud Grandmother and these inspiring words.
